SLANZA and LIANZA
Nov 9 2009, 5:35 PM EST
I can't seem to find any information on this topic. So I'm just wondering why SLANZA isn't part of LIANZA? Is there a reason for this?Do you find this valuable?

Hi Beth, I don't really know the answer for your questions, but this is interesting:http://www.beehive.govt.nz/node/10094 Maybe there's stuff in LIANZA meeting minutes from around then, or perhaps some of the people originally involved (I know Glenda F is a wiki member!!!) can chip in with some more info. Cheers, Miriam Do you find this valuable? |

In 1998, Singapore was supposed to be forming a nationwide School Library Association, so they could host the IASL conference in 2000. However, they were unable to form the association and join IASL, which is a pre-requisite for the conference. The Auckland School Library Association (ASLA) found out about it and so set about bringing all the different library associations in NZ to form a school library association so we could have the IASL conference here. The association needed to be separate from any other groups, to be able to join the conference, so now we have an relationship with LIANZA but are not part of it. I was on the ASLA and IASL conference committee at the time, so hope this explains things!

Thanks for explaining that, it's always good to know the history. I was thinking that perhaps school librarians would be taken more seriously if we were part of a bigger, professional organisation. Is this something the membership of SLANZA wants? I'm interested to know what everyone's opinion is on this.

Fiona is correct in stating that we have an ongoing relationship with LIANZA which we continue to strengthen. One of the strongest and most positive advantanges to SLANZA being a seperate professional body is we are in a position to advocate for the issues and concerns of particularly school library teams. LIANZA has a much wider library focus and so on a national stage SLANZA is fortunate to have its own voice within forums and initiatives such as the Strategic Advisory Forum which looks at all aspects of library services within New Zealand and on the EPIC Goverance Group. SLANZA is still a relatively young organisation but over the past two or three years we have been asked to actively contribute to many library issues in New Zealand. We are a professional organisation which is taken very seriously.I hope this helps clarify our national contributions. Senga White President SLANZA 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
