Summer 09/10

Summer is coming!

What are you lining up ready to snaffle from your library for the summer? What have you read while the weather has been conducive to sitting down with something cool in your hand, and sinking softly into a scintillating book?

Put them on the threads below, with descriptions if you want, so that we can all get ideas. They could then be transferred to 22 books or Good Reads or Library Thing if you want.

I am very interested in what people do in or with their school libraries during the long holidays. I wonder .........do you let students take books home, do you have some open days for students to return books and borrow more, do you target particular groups in the school to keep their reading mileage going?

CaroleLib The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness 16 Jul 14 2010, 11:32 PM EDT by Anderina

This book is amazing! Briefly, the main character, Todd is the last boy in his town, a strange place where everyone can hear each other's thoughts (or Noise). Just a month away from the birthday that will make him a man, he discovers that the town has been lying to him and he must literally run for his life. For the first time in ages, this was a book that I couldn't put down and finished in only 3 sessions. Definitely not a relaxing bed time read, but I will be highly recommending this one. Now I'm anxiously anticipating the arrival in our library of the sequel, The Ask and The Answer so that I can savour it over the summer. For those of you further north, keep an eye out for Patrick Ness who will be visiting some NZ centres in February or March.

Sub title: life lessons from notable people from all walks of lifeed. Anita Silvey, Roaring Book Press, NY, 2009[former editor of The Horn Book Magazine].
Well, I think life would be a bit limited if one believed the title but it is a great guide to books which have lasting power and very interesting to a biography reader.
Divided into chapters on Understanding, Principles and precepts, vocation, motivation and storytelling. It has a piece from the famous person [ a lot of whom are authors], an excerpt from the book, illustrations and detailed info on the book and author and illustrator. There are also notes on the contributors, lists of the books with publication details, and further recommendations over a huge variety of booklists.
Many of the books have been reprinted fortunately or are still available, otherwise this would just be entertainment for over 35 yr olds!
